As I gaze into the mirror
That conceals
Someone else.

Every gaze a mirror’s glare;
Be the phrase’s meaning empty,
Yet it’s laden with a prayer.

Whether masked or whether bare,
Is an echo of the answer,

Every victory casts the conquered
In the comfort of defeat;
And the love songs of the conquerer
Never throng the peoples street.
In the vague hum of a worn tune
Is the form of something new;
As I’m yearning to be born again
